Tutorial 11: Map layers & Wold layers

This tutorial will explain how map and world layers can be created and used within EnergyPlanner.

In this video. Let's look at map layers and world layers and how to use them.

Go to edit Layers and select Map Layers. Here you can view the active Map layers. To change the order of the layers, click and then drag any of them. Dragging the individual sliders will change their opacity.

If you want, you could then sort the layers by their opacity. The currently active layers are all default maps, so now let me show you how you can add a custom map layer.

Go ahead and click on New Custom Layer. Under the dropdown you can see all file types. Win planner supports ranging from static files to streaming sources.

Specify a source type and name your new custom layer.

Then specify a coordinate system and import the file from your computer.

When the source layer you've imported requires cross origin, you can check that, and underneath that, you have the option to add your custom layer to all EnergyPlanner projects associated with your account. By checking Multi Project. You could upload a legend image and then add the layer to your list.

Now look for the layer in the list.

Check the icon next to its name to add it to your active layers.

This custom map layer with a georeferenced climatology map now helps me accurately plan my wind farm at optimal locations.

Furthermore, it's possible to add heat maps to EnergyPlanner. In this example, we've added a GeoJSON file with vector data. When we go to the edit properties of this layer, we can customize the point style. Here we can enable the heat map. Change the radius, stroke width and fill and stroke color.

Next I'll show you how to draw on the map

You can start drawing on the 2D map through the draw tools. There are four types of drawing tools. There is the type line area and circle. It's possible to change the fill and stroke color, stroke width and fill opacity to your liking.

in the Line and Area tool. You can choose to draw your own shapes using free draw.

Click on the cross to leave drawing mode. Go to Map Layers. Scroll down to Sketch Layers and notice how a new sketch layer has been created automatically. To add a separate layer for sketches, scroll down to Sketch Layers and add the new layer.

Now there are multiple layers to draw on and then toggle or compare.

Now let's look at world layers. There are multiple world images for your specific use case. Through the dropdown you can choose from Mapbox satellite ArcGIS satellite, Bing satellite. Bing Satellite Labels and Bing Maps Road. The section underneath World images is World Terrain Data. Terrain data is covered worldwide with cesium ion terrain, which is the default terrain of EnergyPlanner.

If your project is located in the Netherlands, we recommend using and for terrain for high detail data in that part of the world, which you can select through the dropdown in the Terrain Data tab. In some situations, it is important to use actual and local DTM or Digital Terrain model data, which we can assist you with to ensure that visualizations are maximally accurate.

The third section deals with 3D tile sets in EnergyPlanner, which we will discuss in a separate video.

Lastly, I'll show you the only tool in the layers panel we haven't covered yet, which is the measure Tool to measure a distance on the 2D map. Specify a beginning point and an end point by clicking. These towers must be placed at least 750m away from a certain residential area.

So we now know they need to move. Let's reposition the towers accordingly. And let's verify that they are now placed according to the requirements.
